Support free speech for bloggers

We’d like to thank everyone who is volunteering to commit with their support. We owe this movement to imprisoned bloggers everywhere and it’s important that we all stick together to make sure that our efforts pay off. Yesterday it may have been them, but tomorrow it may be us, and the best way to prevent it is to take action today. Let’s work together and show the world that nothing beats the power of free speech. (Seriously. Nothing.)

For those of you who are first time visitors of this initiative, you can start by reading our about page for a background on how and why the movement was founded. Here’s additional information:

Why just one day?

Because dedicating one day to a cause is effective. It doesn’t mean that we’ll work only 1 day of the year for free speech, but it means that this will be the day that we all truly unite to make our voices heard. The idea is to make this voice as loud as possible on March 18th of every year, in memory of Iranian blogger Omid Reza who died on this day last year, and in honor of the millions of persecuted bloggers worldwide.

Free speech:

Since free speech is such a “duh,” a lot of people take it for granted. Yet this is a human right that millions around the world are literally risking their lives for every single day. Blogging for us is a battle, not yet a guaranteed right. Every other human right starts first with the right to express and demand for them. Many of us still don’t have that. Now we must create an effective, visible global movement that directly communicates this need to potentially millions of others worldwide who will help us make March 18th THE day for the free speech of bloggers, where every dead, imprisoned, tortured, harassed, and threatened blogger will be recognized, remembered, celebrated and fought for.

Will it help?

Yes. Yes. Yes. There’s no other way to communicate our hope and optimism for this. The movement’s mission allows people to become aware of (and eventually take action for) persecuted bloggers whose only “crime” is actively practicing their right to free speech by way of blogging. More than just awareness, this will also create a sense of unity and protection for bloggers at risk of torture and imprisonment, who alarmingly number in the millions. We know that this movement will make a difference – but only if it actually works, and it can’t work without you. It can’t. So you have to help us.

Are you in?

Here’s how you can help out in preparation for the big day. Options include:

  • Tweeting about this – and if so, please use the tags #or318 or #mar18. Remember to follow us @OR318 for news! Let us know you’re participating so that we follow you back.
  • Take a video of you expressing your support for free speech and send it to us.
  • List yourself here as a member. You don’t have to be a blogger to do this. You may choose to write only your Twitter handle, if you have one, and if you don’t, only your name and country would suffice.
  • If you run a blog, grab a banner for it.
  • If you’re not into videos, photos, and any of that, there are still ways you can get involved! Especially if you’re on Facebook and Twitter. We’ll be writing separate blog posts about these shortly. Stay tuned, and stay united for free speech everywhere.
